It’s Spoonbill Time At Grand Lake!

The legendary Spoonbill fishing at Grand Lake is at it’s prime right now!

Here is the latest fishing report, as of April 17th, from Grand Lake fishing guide Rusty Pritchard

The water temperatures are up to where they need to be to kick off the spawn and we are one good heavy rain away for it to break wide open. Now, if it will only rain like that.

My clients put 33 spoonbill in the boat last Sunday and 20 some on Saturday – man, what a blast!!

A lot of people have been asking me about the rig I use for spoonbill fishing.

Just one of the spoonbill my clients boated last weekend.

Well here you go. What I use is the catfish warrior 8′ xtra heavy rod, power pro 80 lbs braid line, penn squawl reels, and Spoonbill King 10/0 barbless hooks.

That setup has helped me land over 750 of those beautiful paddlefish this year so I know it’s tough equipment!!

Crappie were starting to work up on the banks and several reports through the middle of this week, after that bitter cold front, that lots of crappie are starting to be caught in the docks.

I still here good reports on white bass up the Spring and Neosho rivers. Most people are throwing the 2″ Go-Go minnow on 1/8 and 1/4 ounce heads.

These can be bought at both Honey Creek Outdoors and Grand Lake Sports Center in Grove or can be ordered online at Outdoor Brandz website.

The catfish are doing excellent up in shallow water right now!! I wouldn’t fish any water deeper than 5′ deep this time of year especially if the sun is out!! Make yourself a Carolina Rig and put a fresh shad on and throw them shallow and hold on!!

Bowfishing is getting ready to fire off soon. I Can’t wait to get out there and do some guiding for that!! I do a lot of trips for bowfishing and it’s something the whole family can do!! I furnish all the equipment and no experience is needed!!
