Yes, it’s still going to be a little chilly, but there is no doubt that Spring Fever has hit Grand Lake with the first Poker Run of 2014 set for Saturday, March 1st, as part of the annual Welcome Back Weekend events.
Just to be clear – with a cold weekend forecast – if there is any doubt about the events continuing, make sure to call the Grand Lake Area Chamber of Commerce at (918) 782-3214 or visit http://www.grandlakechamber.org.
Now, the fun gets started Friday night with a Welcome Back ‘Icebreaker’ Cocktail Party at Hooker’s at Cherokee Yacht Club. This party is open to the public (as are all the festivities taking place at the yacht clubs this weekend), and the first drink is on the house – whose house, we’re not real sure.
Then on Saturday, before you layer up, from 8 am to 10 am enjoy a Pancake Breakfast at Arrowhead Yacht Club with benefits the ‘Girlfriends of the Airport’ – the South Grand Lake Regional Airport, that is.
After that it’s time to get on those layers for a chilly boat ride as part of the Poker Run! Now, in years past, many folks have taken to the heated comfort of land vehicles to hit all the stops. I’m not real sure if that’s encouraged or not this year…probably need to ask one of the people who are in charge…which means you’ll need to find out whose in charge.
Anyway, from 10 am to 5 pm you can pick up your chips for the Poker Run. You must be 21 to play and be eligible to turn in a hand for prizes.
Speaking of prizes, this year you are playing for 1st Prize – a $2,500 trip voucher, 2nd Prize – a 1 year membership to Arrowhead Yacht Club/Cherokee Yacht Club and 3rd Prize – $250 in gas from Grand Lake Boat Sales. Apparently there will be other prizes as well.
The stops to pick up your cards include:
- Arrowhead Yacht Club
- Cherokee Yacht Club
- Hammerhead Marina
- Cedar Port Marina
- Dick Lane’s of Grand Lake
- Grand Lake Boat Sales
- Harbor’s View Marina
- Shangri-La (we’re guessing the Marina)
Turn in your chips between 6 pm and 8 pm at Hooker’s to find out if you are the big winner.
Also starting at 6 pm at Cherokee Yacht Club is the big party, dubbed the ‘Bootlegger’s Ball’. This is again, open to the public…you don’t need to be a member of the yacht club to attend this event.
The party is an homage to the legends surrounding the construction of the Pensacola Dam and the hearty and determined nature of the laborers who worked on the dam day in and day out during Prohibition in Oklahoma.
Some great stories will be told, era music will be played with a live jazz swing band, plus all sorts of auction items and great Grand Lake fun are in the works.
Not real sure if the $20 per person is just for the Bootlegger’s Ball, or if that includes the Poker Run, or if there is an additional charge for the Poker Run. You need to call the chamber at (918) 782-3214 to find out that information.
This event couldn’t happen without the great help of local Grand Lake organizations, including GRDA, Serenity Hospice, Cherokee Yacht Club, Bank of Grove & Grand Lake’s newest, most favorite service provider, Bolt Fiber Optic Services.
So, make plans to bundle up, get your Poker Run on, and step back in time to the Bootlegger’s Ball at Cherokee Yacht Club on Saturday, March 1st, at Grand Lake.
