The Thunder on Wolf Creek, short course National Hydroplane Boat Races sponsored by the Grand Lake Casino and the Grand Lake Association, is coming to Wolf Creek Park in Grove this weekend, June 20th – 22nd and admission is FREE.

This is the second year for this event and last year’s event brought in huge crowds and participants from all around the nation.

The event is free to spectators and the best place to watch the races is at Wolf Creek Park, along the shoreline. So, bring some lawn chairs and make a day of it!

“We were extremely excited about the attendance and racers that came last year,” said Race Director Leonard Miller.  “We think it will be even bigger this year and it will have a larger impact on the community.”

Thunder on Wolf Creek

The Thunder on Wolf Creek – Short Course National Boat Races – take place June 20th – 22nd at Wolf Creek Park in Grove.

Testing and practice racing will begin on Friday, June 20th with a full weekend of events set to kick-off from there.

There will be a drawing for a Smart TV at 5pm on Saturday. And, yes, you must be present to win.

Free door prize tickets will be given out by the Boy Scouts from 10am – Noon and donations will be accepted after that for door prize tickets.

Food and drinks will also be available throughout the weekend courtesy of Boy Scout Troop 78 of Grove.

And make sure to plan on seeing Miss Grand Lake, who will be in attendance from Noon to 4 pm on Saturday.

As part of the weekend festivities, at 5:15pm  on Saturday there will be a Boy Scout Cardboard Boat Race sponsored by those same Boy Scouts.

The cardboard boat race encourages young people to get creative and build themselves a boat that will hold one or two people, be paddled by human power and must, you know, actually float while the riders complete a short race course that will be set up in Grand Lake.

Basically, cardboard, styrofoam, plastic sheeting, and lots of adhesive and duct tape are will what make up these boats for the ‘Cardboard Regatta’.

There will be lifeguards on duty in kayaks out in the lake in case of any emergency situations, and all participants in the ‘Cardboard Regatta’ are required to wear life jackets.

“This is a fun event to watch and we have so much going on all day for the families,” said Rick Miller.  “Spectators will get to watch some of the best racing in the country, right here on Grand Lake.”

Hydroplane Boats & Races

Hydroplane boats are usually a two-cycle motor on a small frame boat that can cost anywhere between $5,000 and $10,000.

Racers wear kevlar racing suits to protect themselves in case of an accident.

Thunder on Wolf Creek features the short course national championship hydroplane races. These boats can reach up to 90 miles per hour during the races, so it reall is an exciting event to watch.

Each race will be three laps around the course set up in Grand Lake, with somewhere between 6 to 8 races per race or heat, depending on the number of racers entered.

Drivers and teams from at least 15 states are expected, with 2 local Grand Lake teams entered as well – What’s Up Doc and Good Water Craft Racing.
