It’s the Monday morning of the week leading up to Memorial Day and it’s a beautiful morning at Grand Lake.
It just makes you want to be out on the lake…and I see and hear fishing boats out there right now.
So it must be time for this week’s fishing report, once again courtesy of local guide Tony Coatney. Take it away Tony…
Hello Grand Lakers!
Well its the kick off to the busy time…Memorial Day weekend!
Yes, it’s here already and it’s when the lake time begins for many.
Every hotel and every store will be packed and I can tell you that the Grand Lake businesses look forward to Memorial Day weekend all winter long.
All the boaters will be out hot and heavy and all the marinas and restaurants will be packed.
During the three the major holidays there are no fishing tournaments because of the boat traffic.
Also, my guide trips I only do early mornings from 6-9 because the lake gets so busy, but that’s a good thing. Like I said its one of the major holidays and it’s great for the area.
The fishing tournaments have been crazy because all the other lakes in Oklahoma have come up so much and been flooded so they have tried to move a bunch of them to Grand.
Last weekend there were over 500 boats on the water fishing and all the businesses love it!
OK – lets talk about the fishing.
Large mouth has gotten better. They are starting to move out of the coves and trying to start there post spawn pattern. Try top water early, then try a jig or hard head with a [easyazon_link identifier=”B005Z84R06″ locale=”US” tag=”myfamanc-20″]Biffle Bug[/easyazon_link], that should work.
White bass have been really good. Mouth of the rivers – like Elk, Horse Creek, Honey Creek – have been working for me using spoons. [easyazon_link identifier=”B0000AUXW2″ locale=”US” tag=”myfamanc-20″]Silver Rainbow minnow[/easyazon_link] has worked for me the last 20 years!
Crappie they have really slowed down from their spawn action and should be moving to deeper water. Try the bridges and brush piles under docks using the Bobby Garland Troller.
Catfish was really good when the water was rising but slowed down when it started dropping.
Spoonbill are jumping everywhere so be careful out there – I almost hit one yesterday.
Until next time….Good Luck Fishing from Tony Coatney!
