Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees is known throughout the country for it’s great boating – with a wide, deep channel – and it’s great fishing, having recently hosted two (2!) B.A.S.S. Master Classics and routinely recognized as one of the top fishing lakes for crappie, catfish and bass in the country.

But there is a lot of other really cool stuff around Grand Lake to check out. And I’m not just talking about the great waterfront restaurants where you can enjoy good food and great Grand Lake views.

Here are some of the best family fun things to do around Grand Lake:

Visit the Pensacola Dam and take a free tour

Pensacola Dam, which created Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, is truly one of the most impressive sites in Oklahoma at a little over 1 mile in length and rising 147′ above the ground.

Oh yea…it’s also the longest multiple-arch dam in the World!

Pensacola Dam is open daily for FREE Tours from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 9 am to 4 pm. You can also schedule tours throughout the year with groups of 10 or more by calling 918-782-4726.

The GRDA Ecosystem and Education Center is located at the West end of Pensacola Dam on Highway 28 in Langley is a beautiful Grand Lake showpiece and includes lots of area information and is the place to go to start your ‘dam tour’.

There is also a courtesy dock located at the west end of the dam where you can park your boat and walk right up to the Ecosystems and Education Center.

Visit Har-Ber Village Museum in Grove

Har-Ber Village Museum Grove OKHar-Ber Village Museum is a pioneer-era village and history museum located in Grove right on the shores of Grand Lake.

You can experience the history and ecology of the Grand Lake area through self-guided tours, which includes a walk through the grounds with several historic buildings include a relocated schoolhouse, jail and 16 log cabins.

The museum has an active calendar of special events throughout the year for local residents and visitors alike.

Har-Ber Village also includes a nature trail, cafe and an events center that regularly hosts community events.

Visit Grand Lake State Park Bernice Nature Center

At the Nature Center at Bernice State Park on Grand Lake you will find cool exhibits about the area’s native wildlife.

You can check out bees staying busy with their hive, see several taxidermied native animals, including a bobcat, and watch the snakes and lizards in the 1,000 gallon aquarium that simulates their habitat.

There is also a nature walking path and a couple of wildlife watch towers all located right there on the shores of Grand Lake at Bernice State Park.
