Well it’s Stand Up Paddle (SUP) boarding, of course.
If you didn’t already know that, you should, because stand up paddle boarding is truly one of the best ways to get ‘on’ the water – whether at Grand Lake or any body of water anyplace else.
(Note – Check out this updated post on paddleboarding at Grand Lake HERE)
And it’s not hard to get on the water. Really, all you have to do is find the right people and show up. Not hard.
Now that I’ve been on the water a couple of times, there are a few things I can tell you…
- It’s not nearly as difficult as you think it’s going to be
- At the same time, it’s really, really good for you
- It’s a great conversation starter with people on docks wondering what in the world you are doing
- People on boats WILL take your picture
Did I mention that SUPing – that’s the lingo, you know – is really good for you?
SUPing works your arms, legs, back and your core – all at the same time.
By paddling along the Grand Lake shore a few miles you can get a serious workout.
The constant instability of the board makes it a challenge for all of the smaller muscle groups in the body, while your working your arms and chest and shoulders with the paddling to make yourself go.
But here is what’s crazy…I’ve never been really sore the next day. Even at 46 years old and not really in very good shape. Even after a 4 mile paddle on only my second day on the water.
Sure, you can feel that you did something for the first time, but whatever it is you feel the next day after your first few times on the water actually feels really good.
So your getting a great full body workout while seeing Grand Lake at a bit slower pace than you normally see it from the water.
And, you have total control of where you go as well. You want to hug the shore…then hug it. You want to get out into the Grand Lake big water…then head on out there!
Plus, and this is something I really like…you are not ‘burning fuel’ – just calories!
It’s fun, it’s good for you and it doesn’t even feel like a workout when your doing it. What could be better?
