Your Guide To Choosing The Perfect Grand Lake Vacation Rental
Whether you’re a first-time visitor to Grand Lake or a returning vacationer, selecting the perfect rental property for your stay can make a world of difference.
To help you navigate the process, we’ve put together this comprehensive guide, considering everything from location and amenities to budget and customer service.
Choosing the Right Location
Grand Lake is a big lake, and depending on what you are looking for in your Grand Lake getaway, where you choose to stay can have a big impact on things.
Is it important to you to be on the lake, with access to a boat or swim dock, with panoramic lake views? Or would you rather have quick and easy access to off-the-water activities likes night life and shopping?
Grove is commercial hub of the Grand lake area, and offers the most options when it comes to dining, shopping, things to do (movies, mini-golf, etc), and ongoing fun events scheduled throughout the year.
If you choose north of Grove, you will find a quieter area of the lake, perfect for those peaceful getaways or maybe a fun fishing trip.
Or, maybe Monkey Island is right for you. Monkey Island features the full-service and far-reaching Shangri-La Golf Club, Resort, and Marina, which includes a luxury, full-service hotel, plus 45 holes (yes, 45!) of golf, a full-service marina that includes boat rentals and charters, and a fantastic activity center called The Anchor, that includes a state-of-the-art arcade (think VR games), plus a wiffle ball field, pickleball and tennis courts, and a great sports bar showing all of the games that you might want to see.
Besides Shangri-La, you will find plenty of other great bars and restaurants on Monkey Island – so it’s the perfect spot if you are looking for a little nightlife.
And, the South Grand Lake area offers some of the best boating in this region with wide open and deep water, and deep coves that are perfect for anchoring out and spending a day on the water, including enjoying the legendary cliffs at Dripping Springs.
The Duck Creek arm of Grand Lake is home to Arrowhead and Cherokee Yacht Clubs, plus Safe Harbor Harbors View Marina and Ugly John’s Marina, and probably the most well-known area of Grand Lake.
And don’t forget off-the-water fun, like you will find in Disney, with the famous rock-crawling and 4×4 trails that you will find on the rocks below Pensacola Dam.
What About Amenities
Now that you’ve got the location part of the equation handled, you need to consider the amenities that are important to you in a Grand Lake vacation rental.
Every short-term rental will offer different amenities, although you can typically expect a fully equipped kitchen, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, linens, etc.
But, do you want, or need, access to a boat dock? Or maybe you want a dock so you can go fishing.
How important are those panoramic Grand Lake views to you?
Do you need a large outdoor area for gathering and cooking out – some places might not even allow you to cook out at all. So be aware of that when booking your stay.
Additionally, make sure to considering such things as pet friendliness – some places might allow dogs and some might now, and if there are any special accessibility needs in your group.

Timing of your Stay
It’s also important to consider the timing of your stay and the impact on price, availability, etc.
Obviously, the big holiday weekends of Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day are the most popular for a lake destination like Oklahoma’ Grand Lake.
But, typically, there is availability around the lake on these weekends, as long as you are willing to pay for it.
If you do have a little flexibility, whether that is a summertime stay but not during a holiday weekend, or maybe visiting Grand Lake in the “off-season” (although, Grand Lake is pretty awesome all year round, just sayin’) then you will like find a great selection of vacation rentals with a little more variation in price.
Speaking of off-season, that is all relative. because if your reason for coming to Grand Lake is to try to snag a legendary Grand Lake spoonbill (Paddlefish) or maybe to get on the rocks in Disney, those things are most popular in the non-summer months.
Another thing to consider when it comes to timing is whether or not you are wanting to be around during some of the most popular Grand Lake events, whether that’s all the fireworks fun around Independence Day or a popular festival like Pelican Fest in Grove in the fall.
To help you with that, we try to keep the Events page of this Grand Lake Living website up to date with listing for the most popular annual events added months in advance, so you can see the dates and try to plan accordingly.
Booking Your Stay
The last thing we want to talk to you about is actually booking your stay at your chosen Grand Lake rental.
As with anything and everything in today’s world, you want to do your own due diligence.
Some things to consider when it comes to actually boking your stay at Grand lake include:
Read reviews for the property AND the host, wherever you can find them, which is primarily on the big portal sites
Can you book directly with the owner? Some allow and prefer this, others insist on going through the big portals. Does that matter to you?
Are there minimum stay requirements?
What about the cancellation policy. Things can and do come up.
Is the owner or host on site or nearby? This may matter to you or may not.
Rules for that property, including prohibitions against smoking or vaping, BBQing, etc. What can you and can you not do?
With all of that said, let’s get to what you are most likely looking for anyway, and that is some links to featured Grand lake vacation rental properties.
